HELP: Lydia (21) has gone missing for days

A family's plea to help find missing Lydia.

When teenage girls go missing, the assumption in most cases is that they are with their boyfriends and these cases are never taken seriously.

Every day in South Africa there are cases reported of children going missing and while some are found alive, others often turn up dead, leaving their families distraught.

The Sithole family did not expect that they too, would one day go through the harrowing experience of reporting a relative missing. Their daughter Lydia, who recently turned 21, has been missing since September 21 this year.

According to the family, a few relatives left Soweto to attend a funeral in Pietersburg and on their return, they called the missing Lydia’s cell phone which went straight to voicemail.

“We tried calling her without success and we went as far as visiting her friends and asking them when last did they see her or know her whereabouts,” said her aunt, Stella.

The family have been in discussion with several of her friends to see whether they would be able to get any leads and said that her friends were unanimous that the last time they say, Lydia, was the Saturday on which the family travelled to Pietersburg.

The family have become increasingly worried about her whereabouts and have gone as far as conducting a search at the nearby hostel, without any success.

Stella said, “We took her from Limpopo in Giyani because her mother always complained about her, so we offered to give her a chance to further her studies and earn that good living.”

“Every time we hear that there is a lead, we follow up on it and many people say that they have seen her in so many places, especially in Zone 5.”

The family also took the initiative to conduct their own search and hope that she is still alive and are continuing the search for their niece and are pleading with anyone who may have sighted the missing Lydia Sithole to contact Stella on 082 751 3357.
