Put a smile on someone’s dial this matric banquet season

To donate a dress, shoes or a suit, please contact Nosipho Goduka.

Nosipho Goduka [24] is a dreamer, entrepreneur and an inspiration to society considering the kind of work she is doing in her community.

She brings hope and makes most girls’ dream of going to a matric dance come true. As denoted on the kekoon webpage, “In South Africa, the equivalent of the American prom is the matric dance, taking place during the final year of high school.

“It usually takes the form of a formal dinner and dance. The matric dance has become a defining moment in the life of many young ladies.”

You might be wondering how a 24-year-old girl accomplishes all of this. But, as much as it is impossible to walk to the moon – making someone smile or cry tears of joy is achievable, just ask Nosipho.

Her work is life-changing and will certainly impel other individuals to give back. She asks for donations from people for dresses and they have responded positively to her act of kindness. A total of 21 dresses were donated since the initiation of project ‘I Made Her Smile’.

She founded this project after a girl from her church wanted to attend a matric dance but couldn’t, since both of her parents were unemployed. She asked Nosipho if she could borrow a dress and shoes. Nosipho said the girl was in luck because they were both the same size.

“I knew that there was something I could do and hence I Made Her Smile,” she said [smiling].

How it works is, a person who cannot afford to get an outfit for a matric dance would inbox, call or send a WhatsApp message to Nosipho asking for help.

“I am an orphan. It was a bit difficult to attend my matric dance. I had many people help me – thanks to friends and family who gave me the support I needed.

“They made me look and feel extremely beautiful on that day. They made me look at life differently. My smile lit up the room. It is because of them that I realised that helping others in struggle is the best way to give back.

“It isn’t just about giving a person a dress, I also do make-up, hair and transport them to the venue. I have made seven girls smile since the commencement of the project,” she said.
