WATCH: Government deploys a 100+ special TRT cops in Westbury

‘We are ready for you’.

More than a hundred members of the Tactical Response Team (TRT) have been deployed in Westbury to fight crime emanating from gangsterism. Police Minister Bheki Cele had promised to respond to resident’s request for a special team of police during a meeting he held with them early this week.

“We made a promise here after you wanted our special TRT team. I hope you have all the reasons to accept and receive them because you requested them,” said Cele to residents of Westbury while showing them the deployed team.

The police minister went on to issue a stem warning to drug dealers and gangsters saying they will be squeezed out of the community and be sent to jail.

He said, “We are saying if gangsters want war, they must not shoot women, children and innocent member of the community. If they want to shoot, they must shoot at the police and I promise you they will not win.”

The TRT team will be working together with the Johannesburg Metro Police, Visible Policing, Dog Unit and the National Intervention Unit. Westbury has been plagued by gang related violence which has left dozens dead.

The latest victim is a 45 year old mother who lost her life after catching a stray bullet during a shootout between members of rival gangs. The incident sparked violent protests in the area and prompted the minister of Police to visit the area where he promised to deploy a special team of police.

Last year, 33 people were murdered in Westbury and already this year about 15 have lost their lives according to the police minister. Cele also made a plea to residents to work with the police and provide them with information.

“I don’t expect any animosity or clashes between these police and the community. Work together, support them, talk to them and give them information about criminals,” appealed Cele to the residents of Westbury.

In addition to the deployed units, there is also a team of investigators and detectives who will be dedicated to working in Westbury. Cele ended by promising the people of Westbury that an inter-ministerial team will visit the area to address other social issues such as unemployment and housing.
