Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi, wishes to join the world in commemorating the World Teachers’ Day today. Teachers are the foundation of our civilization for their role in nurturing, educating and inspiring future leaders, professionals, artisans and workers.

“On this day, we wish to convey a message of support and appreciation to teachers for their dedication in shaping the future of all children and sometimes going beyond the call of duty.

“Schools stand and fall on the leadership of the school. We commend teachers who work tirelessly and with passion to groom future leaders of this country,” said Lesufi.

Lesufi said as society changes, teachers should sharpen their skills and knowledge. He said this is why the department invests in further development of teachers.

To that end, the Gauteng Department of Education has invested substantial sums of money to train teachers to use and adapt ICT in over 300 township-based schools. All these teachers have been provided laptops with the latent content so that they can be innovative.

“We are proud of what we colloquially call e-educators that were introduced in the Gauteng school environment. These are versatile teachers who can easily utilize a computer to teach and contribute towards the realization of the fourth industrial revolution.

“The department has a responsibility to continue provide necessary support to these e-educators of the future. We reiterate the principle that educators and learners should work and learn in a safe and conducive environment,” said Lesufi.

For that reason, violence against our educators should be roundly condemned and as a department will not hesitate to act against perpetrators. Teachers should be assured of the departments commitment to ensure a conducive environment for teaching and professional development.

“We applaud teachers choosing to work tirelessly for the education of our children and for not being dismayed by some of the challenges they face in their place of work. Their enormous contribution is highly appreciated and we will continuously offer support where necessary,” said Lesufi.
