Are you really finished at fifty?

Barbara Hendricks formed a WhatsApp group and Facebook page called 'Finished at Fifty?' so that she can build her network.

Barbara Hendricks (58) originally from Riverlea shares her vision of empowering middle-aged women who are unemployed. According to Hendricks, there are available jobs out there but agencies and companies are not looking at the middle-aged group.

“It’s usual jobs for the youth and even the retired people but what about the middle-aged people? The middle ages are a time where we not so familiar with the technology, we don’t know much but we are at a stage in our lives where we can be of value to companies because we are nurturers, mentors who have experiences that can help companies,” said Hendricks.

The visionary noticed that many middle-aged women are currently looking after their grandchildren or their ageing parents and for them to get back into the workforce is almost impossible these days.

“It’s really tough to get into a job at this age because most of us completed Grade 10, I only did Grade 10 and all the years’ companies use to accept that as matric equivalent but today they don’t.

“Applying for jobs online is a nightmare, it’s overwhelming because you don’t know if it’s scams and people are desperate and they go for these offers, it’s just dangerous,” explained Hendricks.

Hendricks would like agencies or organisations to form a network so that they can equip or train the middle-aged women with the skills for what is required by companies nowadays so that they can go back into the workplace. Even though she’s calling her mission ‘Finished at Fifty?’, Hendricks stated that she also includes the forty-year-olds.

“We not dead or dumb, we might be good at everything but we can add value to companies,” added Hendricks.

The visionary also stated that she has approached recruitment agencies to ask them to look at her vision and she also asked if they have temporary jobs or the fixed term contract jobs to give the ladies an opportunity to gain the experience.
