Dobsonville police officers have expressed their concern after over seven cases of cell phone robberies were reported at the police station this year.
According to spokesperson constable Mzwakhe Xazi, unsuspecting cell phone users often receive calls from unscrupulous cell phone operators telling them that their cell phone numbers have been tampered with.
He said, “The syndicate members advise clients to quickly make a swim swap. They also asked the cell phone clients for confirmation of their details, home address and contact numbers. After they receive these details, they immediately withdraw money from the scam victims’ bank accounts.”
According to Xazi, the syndicate targets MTN and Vodacom users and cautioned that this didn’t mean the other cell phone networks clients were immune to this scam.
He added that this month, another complainant filed a case at the Dobsonville Police Station after her savings were withdrawn by the same syndicate.
“Our police station were alerted to the syndicate’s existence in June and the number of victims has seen an increase since then. We urge people not to disclose their identity numbers or residential addresses via cell phone.
“Currently, no arrests have been made by police. People who may have information about the syndicate are requested to report the case at their nearest police station,” said Xazi.
