‘We need to protect our stadium, not vandalise it’

Vandalism at the stadium has gotten out of hand.

A stadium is a place for all outdoor activities which includes sporting events, concerts and rallies. The Eldorado Park Stadium in Cumming Road Ext 9 has been around for decades, but caretaker Phillip Davis fears that within the next few years, the community will no longer be able to make use of the facility.

According to Davis, vandalism at the stadium has gotten out of hand.

“I have been working here for 23 years and every year the state of the stadium decreases because of crime in our community, our people are becoming desperate,” he said.

The caretaker confirmed that over the past few months, the fence surrounding the stadium has been stolen by youngsters and sold at scrap yards in the community.

“The stealing of the fence started at the beginning of the year. I noticed that the steel poles were going missing every day and now the fence at the back of the stadium is almost completely gone,” said Davis.

He continued, “These youngsters come to the stadium at night to literally break off the steel fence, floodlights have been stolen and our offices have been broken into as well.”

Davis said that the matter has been reported to the police but nothing has been done.

“I’m not blaming the police, but I am appealing to the community to help think of ideas to stop the crime in our community. Our scrap yards are accepting stolen goods, that is our first problem,” said Davis.

“My worry is that soon our children won’t have a stadium to enjoy. We need to protect our stadium, not vandalise it,” he added.
