‘Our children need to know the importance of Heritage Day’

"We are a beautiful rainbow nation, enough with all the division, we need to teach our children unity. Today should blur our differences," Finley Watson.

The nation marked Heritage day last week Monday, a day meant to celebrate and recognize the various cultures in South Africa. While the country celebrated and reminisced, the Eldorado Park community was no different.

Ward 18 Bill Jardine branch members organized an event focused on teaching the Eldorado Park children the importance of the day.

ANC youth league chairperson, Finley Watson said that the event was organized in the hopes of bringing the community together.

“We are a beautiful rainbow nation, enough with all the division, we need to teach our children unity. Today should blur our differences,” he said.

Over 250 children attended the event which was held on the soccer field in Extension One. The children played a number of indigenous games and jumping castles were set up to allow them to have fun. April Kenny (9) said that Heritage Day was her favourite day because she could wear colourful clothing and eat different cultural foods.

“Its always nice to learn about other cultures, in my coloured community, we don’t have traditional, clothes so seeing my friends dress up in theirs is always fun,” she said.

Watson, who was part of the organizing committee said that the event exceeded his expectations.

“We originally planned for 100 children, but 100 more joined us and that warmed my heart. Today was all about them, we had talks with them about how important it was to love and respect others.

“They are our future leaders and I believe that with enough guidance they can change our country for the better,” he said. “A few children came dressed in their traditional attire, that made me so happy and proud,” he added.

Three local soccer teams, Juventus FC, Future Generation and Lincoln City played friendly games in the spirit of Heritage Day.
