September is the month that we shed light on the life and challenges faced by our hearing impaired brothers and sisters.
Deaf Awareness Month is commemorated in South Africa from September 1-30.
The purpose of Deaf Awareness is dedicated to educate the community about hearing loss, deafness, deaf culture and sign language.
Ubuntu Wellness Gym held a event to educate the community about deaf culture, sign language and also to promote healthy lifestyle.
The event was attended by Dube residents and nearby areas at Dube Boxing Club.
The aim is to ensure that hearing people understand deafness and the culture of the deaf community.
Throughout the day people participated in different activities such as boxing, aerobics, karate and self-defense.
Instructor and Project Manager Godfrey Sinthumile said a healthy lifestyle within the communities is needed because the rate of obesity in South Africa is high.
“We encourage people to change and stick to a healthy lifestyle. Through healthy lifestyle we can beat obesity,” added Sinthumile.
