New weed bill is a joint concern

Legalizing dagga is not a good idea.

While many may celebrate marijuana being legalized, Eldorado Park parents are infuriated by the Concourt’s decision. Although opinions are divided, many are of the view that the decision will bring about an infinite amount of problems in the community.

Anti-drug activist and founder of the Yellow Ribbon Foundation, Dereleen James said that with Dagga being legalized, all progress made in the community will be lost because children will now feel justified when smoking. James took to Facebook to make it known that legalizing dagga is not a good idea.

“South Africa’s justice system sucks a further plot to destroy the African child. You legalized abortions, removed prayer from schools and now dagga has been legalized for private use, so much for having sober-minded learners in our schools,” one of her posts read.

Monica Edwards an Extension Three resident and parent, said that she could not believe her eyes when she read about the legalization of dagga.

“This is bad news for our community. So many youngsters are consumed by substance abuse and now to hear that dagga can be consumed privately is scary. What does that mean for our children? I don’t see this having a positive impact on the community, this is going to be a disaster,” she said.

Another resident, Candice Jacobs, feels that the legalization of marijuana won’t change much.

“What people don’t realise is that youngsters have been smoking regardless of dagga being legalized. Whether they remove the law or not, youngsters will continue to consume it.

“It’s at their disposal and that is the real issue. Our community will continue to suffer whether the drugs are legalized or not,” she said.

James said that arrests for under-age smoking and illegal dealing can still be executed. “Not a single person in Eldos has a license to sell weed. Let us remember that. We will still arrest you,” she said.

James is part of the #ReclaimSAMorals which was started on September 19 in hopes to draw attention to the decaying moral fibre of the country. So far, the movement consists of 100 concerned citizens.
