Mrs Africa Finalist visits Westbury

The journey to becoming a Mrs Africa finalist.

At the age of forty, Natasha de Matos is a student at UNISA, a mother of three, a servant in the community of Eldorado Park and she is one of the Mrs Africa Finalists.

Born in Ennerdale but currently lives in the community of Eldorado Park, the finalist made it on the Mrs Africa finalists list in May. On September 19, de Matos visited three schools in Westbury namely, Westbury High where she encouraged the matriculants.

She then addressed Dowling Primary with bullying and drug abuse as the topics there and then she went to Newclare Primary’s Grade 7 learners and spoke about her journey as a Mrs Africa contestant as well as her life’s journey, parenthood, discipline and respect for the teachers.

Before the school visits, de Matos was a guest on the Kofifi FM Breakfast Show.

“I told the children that it’s not about how many times you failed but it’s about how many times you get up. The only time you look down on somebody is when you helping them up. I explained that I failed my matric four times but God has put me through a school of teaching and He wanted me to learn something out of it.”

“I was rebellious in school, peer pressured, I got expelled from school. When I reached adulthood and parenthood I went to night school and completed my matric in 2008 (age of 30). After failing four times, the fifth time I passed with distinctions with a university entry.”

When asked why she chose to visit Westbury, she explained: “Charity begins at home so I’ve already been serving in the community of Eldorado Park so now I want to broaden my horizon by going out to other surrounding communities.

“I’m interested in what happens in other communities so I thought let me go to Westbury and see how I can give back to the community”.

If you would like to meet with the Mrs Africa finalist, she will be hosting a fundraiser on September 29, the fundraiser is called ‘Moonlight dinner with Mrs Africa finalist 2019’ at the Fun Valley Resort at 6 pm. Tickets are sold at R150, R250 per couple and R200 at the door.

According to de Matos, the Mrs Africa title means being a voice of the people. “I wasn’t born with a sash, it’s been a journey, there’s been storms and days when I wanted to give up but just the thought of somebody that’s looking up to me so I won’t just be disappointing myself but others as well. So that’s why I will be the voice of the voiceless.”
