Johannesburg covered in colour

Colour runners had the option of either running, jogging or walking the 5km route which typically takes one to two hours to complete.

Johannesburg Color Run 2018 took place on Sunday, September 16 and left the streets of Johannesburg filled with colour as Sowetans and Joburgers at large took part in the happiest 5kms on the planet.

The day’s festivities began with the carnival tour at the starting line where colour runners were showered with colour. The starting and finishing lines were situated at different points of Roosevelt High School.

Colour runners had the option of either running, jogging or walking the 5km route which typically takes one to two hours to complete.

“The colour run was an amazing experience! It’s not a usual experience compared to your typical 5km run. It was nice to see people from different age groups coming together to enjoy the run and it’s something I would do every year,” said colour runner, Simon Msiza.

Not only does the Colour Run bring fun and colour to the streets of Johannesburg, but it also supports various charities focused on education in the areas where it takes place.

The run raised over R500 000 last year and the for-profit events Management Company is hoping to have raised the amount with this year’s Colour Runs throughout South Africa’s cities.

Msiza noted that the run also signified that South Africa is a rainbow nation.

“People of different races, religions were at the colour run and it was an amazing way to show South Africa’s diversity,” he said.

This year’s run, however, did not live up to multiple colour runner, S’phindile Mbatha’s expectations.

“I attended the first two in Soweto and they were awesome simply because there was more vibe. There were a lot more sponsors than this year and we missed out on performances,” she explained.

Mbatha also felt that this year’s theme was not as clear as the other year’s themes.

“Last year it was a superhero theme; this was very evident throughout the race because people were dressed as superheroes to keep us in the spirit. This year I can’t even tell what the theme was,” she said.

The one thing both Msiza and Mbatha agree that the colour blasts were the best part of the event. The colour blast saw colour runners come together to throw colour in the air as per the instruction of the MC on stage.

For the first time in Colour Run South Africa’s history, colour runners were given medals to celebrate their achievement of finishing the happiest 5km’s on the planet.
