Curbing food wastage the Harvest way

"We are excited about growing the partnership with KFC through their Harvest programme," Wayne Du Plessis.

Projections show that South Africa’s landfills may be full in the next six years. This calls for measures and innovative ways to curb the impending disaster. Harvest, KFC’s worldwide surplus chicken donation programme, hopes to address the issue of food wastage.

Harvest, in partnership with Food Forward SA, donates the surplus chicken to non-profit organisations in an effort to reduce the amount of food that goes to waste. Not only does this initiative help curb food insecurity, but it also helps fight climate change through the reduction of greenhouse emissions associated with food waste.

“At KFC we believe that by re-purposing and redirecting surplus food to those in need it will make a tremendous impact,” said Thabisa Mkhwanazi, Public Affairs Director for KFC Africa. The quick-service restaurant aims to contribute to nutritional eating habits by providing those in need with protein to ensure a balanced meal.

“A meal without protein is incomplete and is a harsh reality for millions of South Africans. A typical “low quality” meal consists of mostly mealie-meal, bread or rice, with very little animal protein or vegetables to provide nutrients,” explained Mkhwanazi in a media statement.

A study conducted by the Boston Consulting Group revealed that there are currently 1.6 billion tons of food being wasted worldwide, while in South Africa 90% of waste is disposed of in landfills which produce methane gas and carbon dioxide. These gasses contribute to greenhouse gas emissions which damage the earth’s ozone layer.

The programme works in such a way that the surplus chicken is delivered to Food Forward SA which provides pickup points for identified NPOs.

“We are excited about growing the partnership with KFC through their Harvest programme. It will allow us to increase access to edible nutritious food, including protein sources, to those who need it.

“KFC area long-standing and valued partner of Food Forward SA and have made it their priority to address food insecurity at scale across South Africa,” concludes Wayne Du Plessis from Food Forward SA.
