Matric farewell season is upon us!

The sad reality is that many are unable to afford the glamorous outfits which are synonymous with this occasion.

For any matriculant, the final year of twelve years of schooling is one which fills learners with trepidation and a sense of achievement. Many are unsure of what the future holds and others look forward to stepping out into the world to leave their mark.

It is a South African tradition for schools to bid farewell to Grade 12s by way of a banquet in which learners, dressed to the nines, are given a taste of adulthood and are partnered up to attend what is probably the most highly anticipated event on their calendar, bar the final examinations.

The sad reality is that many are unable to afford the glamorous outfits which are synonymous with this occasion and Ward 47 councillor Tebogo Mhlari has stepped up to make sure that all the learners are able to enjoy their matric farewell this year.

According to Mhlari, this year’s beneficiaries of articles of clothing to be worn to the farewell, are disadvantaged Grade 12 learners from George Khoza Secondary School.

She said, “They will be attending the matric farewell function to be held on October 20. Not all learners are looking forward to the event due to economic challenges.”

Last year, Mhlari’s office embarked on a matric outfit drive to collect clothes from residents to be worn by the Grade 12 learners at their farewell function.

“We want to make sure that these deserving learners become part of this special occasion and we are requesting that community donates articles of clothing which would go a long way in helping us realise their dream. The items we are requesting for girls include dresses, pant and tops between 28-40 in size. The shoe sizes should be between 3-9.”

“Shirts and suit sizes should be between 28-34 for the boys and their shoe sizes between 5-10,” said Mhlari.

The donated items can be dropped off at the councillor’s offices at the Dobsonville Civic Centre or you may contact her on 072 195 4250.
