Putting up a united front with their dance moves

Soweto Shining Stars Youth Production (SSSYP) is a dance crew that was established on September 25, 1999. The group’s choreography consists of combining popular dance moves into one and giving young up-and-coming dancers an opportunity to learn new dance moves and teaching each other in the process.

According to the dance troupe, they are very fond and passionate about art, culture and dance. The Meadowlands, Zone Ten dance outfit, they specialise in a variety of dances which they go out to perform at local events.

This approach to getting their skills noticed became the platform for others to nurture their love for dance to see whether their talent could propel them to higher heights.

They are managed by Zamokulunga Ntembiso who works with the other members within the group and gives them a chance to choreograph each other.

Thando Ncala, Lindokuhle Masinda, Nompumelelo Silanga and Jabulile Nxumalo have been with SSYP for three years and they see themselves performing and opening their own dance groups as backup dancers for Mzansi artists.

Ncala said, “Dance has always been part of me. Since my childhood, I would dance in front of a mirror and on the streets. Over time, SSYP recognised me and invited me to come and watch them during rehearsals and from then I joined them.”

Not limiting themselves to dance only, they also perform cultural dances, pantsula, kofifi, kwasa kwasa, sbujwa, tempo theatre and poetry.

“What I love about the group is that we are a united family which is driven by prayer and the support of our families,” said Masinda.

“Art is not just a hobby, but one can turn it into a career. The more we are able to nurture different talents, the easier it becomes for our children to stay away from crime and drugs,” Masinda added.
