Nineteen-year-old Allasandra George from Brixton is passionate about empowering the youth by equipping them with information and mentorships. George plans on registering her organisation called ‘The Chosen Generation’ which she started in 2016.

The Chosen Generation focuses on youth upliftment through arts and culture, mentorships and team building programming. George will be hosting her first Career Expo at the Westbury Recreational Centre on September 21.

The expo is set to start at 9 am and end at 12 pm. George explained that her target market is the Grade 11 learners from Westbury High and other surrounding high schools.

The career expo aims to empower the youth through education by creating awareness of the different careers and available funding such as bursaries and other learning opportunities.

According to George, scholars will learn everything related to the different careers paths, job shadowing, internships and they will be able to practice networking skills.

“I’ve seen that many matriculants are unemployed and it isn’t because there aren’t any jobs it’s because of the lack of information and guidance.

With the career expo they will receive guidance and after the expo, I want to establish a mentorship programme so that they won’t be confused in matric, they can just focus on finishing school, that’s why my target market is the Grade 11 learners.”

“You can have the vision but if you don’t have the support and guidance you fall back. I experienced this in my matric year, it was before prelims, I had a few issues and then I dropped out of school.

I didn’t have guidance and support with everything so my motto for the programme is ‘be the mentor you wish you had’ and that’s what I’m trying to do,” explained George.

One of the guest speakers at the expo will be Roshney Rayners. At the career expo, there will not just be universities that are there, there will be a beauty school, fitness experts, modelling, the South African Navy, a photography school, and so forth.
