Man falls victim of mob justice

The man was badly beaten up and was taken by Emergency Service members.

“We are tired of people who smoke nyaope and steal from us.” These were the words of residents of Mapetla who were up in arms thrashing a young man who they claim he has been stealing from them.

According to residents, the man is suspected of smoking nyaope and he steals items in some households and sells them in order to buy the drug.

The man was badly beaten up by the angry mob after he was hunted and was found in a nearby hostel and was dragged to a place where he was suspected of stealing pairs of shoes in a house in Mapetla.

As he tried to run away he was caught by residents who started beating him with shamboks, belts and fists among other things.

The man admitted to stealing and produced other items which he had stolen but denied stealing other things from the community as many residents were complaining about having their houses broken into.

The man was badly beaten up and was taken by Emergency Service members. The community of Mapetla has made it their task to punish those who are suspected of stealing in their households.

Another young man was recently beaten up after allegations that he had been stealing from their homes.

Moroka Police Station spokesperson, Mpande Khoza said they did not receive any report regarding the incident and urged the public not take the law into their hands in such situations but they should report the matter to the police.

Khoza said some victims of crime usually never be satisfied until a person is arrested for allegedly committing a particular crime and convicted and sent to jail.
