‘We lost a hero’- Qhayiso

"I was called to the scene and told that Banele had been shot."

Due to the violence that erupted in the past weeks in Soweto, people lost their lives. White City in Jabavu had the worst incidents as the protests claimed three lives. 23-year-old Banele Qhayiso is one of them.

According to Mandlaekosi Qhayiso, Banele Qhayiso wasn’t one of the looters but a paying customer. He left the house saying he was going to buy bread and snuff. When he was inside the store, residents came in to loot and the next thing he was shot.

“I was called to the scene and told that Banele had been shot and when I got there Banele was lying by the gate of some house. He was still alive but he could no longer speak and died in my arms,” added Qhayiso.

Thando Qhayiso said he was going to graduate this year as he was studying Mechanical Engineering at Rosebank College.

She stated that Banele was a good person who believed in God and always reading a Bible. Qhayiso mentioned that they had a good relationship and always together.

“We lost a hero and he was going to change our lives because he was the only one educated. I still can’t believe that he is gone, he left a void in my heart because I put my trust in him to change our situation and I shall forever hold on to our memories.”

Last week Captain Mpande Khoza confirmed that three people died in White City during the looting and investigations are still underway.
