‘Women’s health issues are important too’ – police

"Women can use pills, implants, injection and condoms for prevention," Lerato Mkhabela.

Itireleng Community Health Centre in Dobsonville hosted a gender-based event last Friday which was aimed at addressing women’s concerns and health challenges in the households.

The event was attended by women and girls learners from Dobsonville. Lerato Mkhabela, who is a midwife, addressed the audience and said that there are a number of methods available for women which assist in the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases.

She said, “Women can use pills, implants, injection and condoms for prevention. Triphasil pills are often used by women who have a low libido.”

She encouraged women to do a pap smear to avoid cervical cancer. Mkhabela said they do the test and the results of Pap smear patients are available after two months.

“We do a pap smear for the screening of cervical cancer. If our screening finds that the patient has cancerous from the cervix mouth, we refer the patient to the gynaecological ward at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital,” said Mkhabela.

Dobsonville Police Station social health prevention, constable Mbali Ntobong said in August, her department received seven cases of concealment of birth in Dobsonville. Con Ntobong said they heard stories of ladies boasting about their ability to twerk and their prowess in the bedroom.

“Young ladies should remember that men will end up marrying a woman who was not the popular one in the group.

“The once popular girl may end up without a career and being unmarried. Women should strive to be independent and work hard in their careers,” she said.
