‘Women, your voice is your strongest asset’

"Both knowledge and experience are closely related to each other. In essence, without knowledge, you may not gain practical experience and in the absence of practical experience, your knowledge and concepts cannot be strengthened," said Tau.

In the modern professional world, both knowledge and experience are needed and 25 young women under the Young Women Skills Revolution, a programme by Philani Community Development Centre, were trained in public speaking skills at a workshop held in Zuurbekom and Dobsonville.

The training was facilitated by Lesego Tau, who is a renowned Human Development Practitioner and author the LOTAR principle book from Dobsonville.

He said, “Communication is the backbone of our society; it allows people to form connections, influence decisions, and motivate change. Without communication skills, the ability to progress in the working world and in life, itself, would be nearly impossible.”

Tau believes that public speaking is one of the most important and -dreaded forms of communication and that speech anxiety is the most common fear people have across the globe.

He said that, in the working world, public speaking is a vital skill to have and to hone because it effects simple, everyday interactions between co-workers, and can also have an enormous impact on your career path and the level of success in your industry.

Philani Community Development Centre founder, Phyllis Malope said, “Young Women Skills Revolution is a platform where experience meets mentees, a space where young women learn from men and women of influence.”

She said it was imperative for anyone who is willing to improve on career development to improve their knowledge and gain work experience, so that they may strengthen their skills and work effectively and efficiently.

Malope said the combination of knowledge and practical experience was a valuable asset in anyone’s professional life, as it skilled you which enables you to carry out the tasks delegated to you, successfully.

“Both knowledge and experience are closely related to each other. In essence, without knowledge, you may not gain practical experience and in the absence of practical experience, your knowledge and concepts cannot be strengthened,” said Tau.

He said the beneficiaries were groomed and guided on how to present to win over a crowd, how to move and inspire people and how to motivate change and inspire action.

Tau said they were also given assignments to deliver presentations on social subjects that affect women. Professionals in the space reviewed and engaged the beneficiaries on the work presented.

“This was done to make them aware that when they present talks, not everyone will welcome their sequence of thoughts. They were also coached and guided on how to maintain a professional outlook in the business world,” said Tau.
