Mr and Miss Little Soweto 2018 crowned

"We are trying to boost the confidence of children, that’s our main aim," Oscar Mabuza.

The crowning of Mr and Miss Little Soweto 2018 was taken to even greater heights this year as it took place at Soweto Theatre on Sunday, 2 September.

Nkanyezi Chauke and Paballo Thipe were crowned Mr and Miss Little Soweto 2018. The young king and queen have won a year’s tuition amongst a host of other prizes.

Their duties, according to Mr and Miss Little Soweto founder and organiser Oscar Mabuza, will include living their lives as young role models who will inspire other young children and getting involved in the charity work done by the Mr and Miss Little Soweto foundation.

The parents of the crowned king and queen were ecstatic at the opportunity their children had been given and saw a bright future for them in the performing arts and pageantry respectively.

“I’m so happy! I can’t believe it! He’s clever but I never expected this, he has proven me wrong a thousand times,” said Sihle Chauke, mother to Mr Little Soweto 2018, Nkanyezi Chauke.

Refiloe Thipe, Miss Little Soweto 2018 Paballo Thipe’s mother, was not surprised at the win as she calls her daughter a “drama queen”.

“I definitely see a future for her in the performing arts. I can tell that she is a natural born creative so I’m going to look into getting her into drama classes,” Thipe said.

Not only were the little ones appreciated throughout the three event pageant but their educators were as well. The principals of the daycare centres who took part in the pageant were given gifts, while some also won spa vouchers.

Oscar Mabuza hopes to see next year’s instalment of the pageant continue to grow.

“As Mr and Miss Little Soweto, we are trying to boost the confidence of children, that’s our main aim so next year we want to see the pageant broadcast nationally. We want our kids to win overseas trips and so much more,” he explained.

He further hopes that the transport challenges the pageant faced this year will be a thing of the past with the 2019 edition and therefore encourages Soweto’s daycare centres to look out for Mr and Miss Little Soweto 2019 and start preparing themselves.
