Best young readers shine at Phendulani Quiz

The winners of the Phendulani Quiz were a group from Bosmont Primary School.

The best young readers from TC Esterhuysen, Dowling, Newclare and Bosmont primary schools battled it out at their first Phendulani Quiz held in the TC Esterhuysen school hall on September 1.

This was the first time the Phendulani Quiz was held in this area. Organiser and Founder of Readers R Leaders, Cyril Turton said it was a great success.

Urged on by an audience of teachers, parents, friends and relatives, the teams were asked questions by quizmaster Marj Brown who started the quiz ten years ago and has expanded it to include over 100 participating schools.

Each of the eight teams that participated on Saturday has been reading a selection of entertaining children’s books over recent months in preparation for the quiz.

The event was also in memory of the late author Chris van Wyk who attended at TC Esterhuysen, one of his books were also included in the quiz for learners to read and then get quizzed on it.

Brown said it was exciting to see the enthusiasm of everyone who attended this debut event and looked forward to it growing into a regular item with more and more local schools participating.

She highlighted the importance of schools’ efforts to develop a culture of reading which builds critical minds and enhances learning in all subjects.

“But most important of all is the fun and enjoyment that reading brings to the life of every person young and old!”

“These young learners are already discovering the joys and excitement of books,” she said.

The winners of the Phendulani Quiz were a group from Bosmont Primary. The group of girls are Zakkiya Sallie, Azraa Hendricks, Amaarah Noorgat, Tarryn Bailey and Liya Julius.

Their teacher who coached them throughout the months was Tasneem Akhalwaya. Story credit: Paul Crankshaw.
