Celebrating and embracing women who wear doeks.

The month August is a national Women’s month and a big deal in South Africa due to all the socio-economic challenges African women are faced with on a daily basis.

Soweto Theatre was adorned with beautiful colours of headwraps on Sunday, August 26 as ‘Basadi Ka Dituku’ (Women in head wraps) graced the place.

The Basadi Ka Dituku event is an annual women’s month commemoration event which was established in 2016, meaning this was the 3rd annual event.

Basadi Ka Dituku is a project that brings women together to celebrate their achievements, share ideas, eat, laugh and dance together it also allows social cohesion and is a great platform for women empowerment.

Women from all walks of life attended for a fun and educational experience. Having seen the beautifully styled head wraps at the event, it goes without doubt that women are creative.

Ranging from front buns, Turban Styled, loosely tied, wrapped updo to wrapped updo to the side they all looked gorgeous. Head wraps have been around for centuries and for women, it’s their identity in society a beautiful adornment that makes them feel unique.

Here are some of her tips to help you Style your Doek like a pro;

– For those who are new to head wrapping, it is advisable to use clip art pins.

Those will help you tuck in weird pieces that you don’t understand and will also help you create the shape you want.

– Start your head from back If you are going to tie your wrap at the front.

– The shape of your face tells you what kind of head wrap would look best on you. If you have a round face, the round- shaped head wrap works better. The high bun looks good on oval-faced people.

– For ladies with short hair, never wear a single head wrap. The trick is to wear another head wrap underneath. This helps give you a great shape.

– Don’t look in the mirror, because your hands’ reflection will confuse you. Your brain will tell you to do something but your eyes and your hands will do something different. Only go back to it when it’s time to do the final fix, and tuck in unnecessary pieces.
