VIDEO: Overgrown grass provides ideal cover for crooks on the prowl

Extension Nine residents are complaining about the uncut grass in the area.

Extension Nine residents are complaining about the uncut grass in the area. Residents said that the grass has grown to several meters high, making open velds the ideal hiding place for criminals.

Not only is it aesthetically unappealing, the long grass also poses an immediate danger to the residents living nearby.

One resident said that the open veld opposite Peter Street in Extension Nine is a matter of serious concern because the grass has grown longer than the average person’s height.

Bishop Robertson complained that the municipality has not cleaned up the Eldorado Park area in a while and urged local councillors to assist by ensuring that the grass is cut and kept short.

According to homeowners, burglaries are prevalent in the area because criminals are able to hide between the long grass. Robertson said that residents have been complaining to him about the safety of their children as well.

“The grass is so long, who knows if there are dead bodies lying there? Our children are at risk of being dragged into these bushes and raped. It is not it is not safe,” he said.

According to residents, certain areas in Eldorado Park are being neglected. A few months ago, the long grass at the jungle in Extension Nine was cut.

“We were told that the municipality would come back to sort out the other affected areas in Extensions Nine and Six but we are still waiting close to a year later,” said a resident.

Ward 17 councillor Peter Rafferty said, “There is no open veld in Peter Street. This street runs from St. Vincent into Matheson Street, where the park is.

“The park has over the years, developed into wetlands and is waterlogged which resulted in the growth of reeds. City Parks and Joburg Water are engaged in how best to address the issue so the park can be revived.”

Bishop Robertson pleaded with local councillors and government officials to keep the grass short.
