The Soweto Action Committee (SAC) Women along with Pimville Community Forum (PCF) and Voices of the Poor Concerned Residents (VPCR), Lehae Dindindawo Landless Movements, Soweto RDP Housing Forum, Sisonke Social Movement, Soweto Electricity Crisis Committee (SECC), Social Workers Revolutionary Party (SWRP), Right to Know (R2K), United Front and #Fuel Prices Must Fall Movement and others marched to the Eskom Diepkloof Offices protesting against the power utility.

Eskom’s split metering system was one of the main issues being blamed for the high tariffs. The march started at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Soweto Campus main entrance and proceeded to Eskom Diepkloof Offices to hand over the memorandum to the Eskom’s representatives.

Joined by senior citizens, marchers were escorted by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD).

“The split metering system has caused enough damage because it has forced underprivileged residents to purchase unaffordable electricity. This is not fair to most pensioners and unemployed citizens,” said the Deputy Chairperson of SAC Pitso Monyela.

“Eskom is a capitalist system and allegedly part of the Guptas. They are pulling their delay tactics stunts not to respond to the delivered memorandum which includes our demands,” said convener of the march and a Secretary-General of SAC, Lerato Mogapi.
