Baking way more than just a few pastries

Talitha Reneker opened the Takatso Bakery to teach the youth of Eldorado Park everything they need to know about baking.

Talitha Reneker opened the Takatso Bakery to teach the youth of Eldorado Park everything they need to know about baking.

She said, “I started this bakery in September last year. It hasn’t been an easy road. If I have to be honest, it was very tough for a while but God has helped sustain this dream of mine.”

The idea behind opening the bakery was to keep idle youth busy and off the streets. Reneker said that so many youngsters came knocking on her door looking for work since the bakery opened.

“It really broke my heart every time I sent them away so I decided that this bakery would open its doors to assist the youth where it can,” she said.

“Today Shadique Samodien is here to help us, he is making doughnuts and is quite eager to learn,” she added.

Samodien said that he enjoyed being at the bakery and has learned how to make delicious doughnuts. The bakery currently prides itself on baking bread, rolls, red cakes, doughnuts, koeksisters, chelsea buns, scones, jam tarts, kolowintjies and birthday cakes.

“For now, I cannot create jobs for our youngsters but I am willing to teach them the skill of baking. I hope that in a few years’ time my bakery will grow busier and bigger, and maybe then I will be able to employ those who truly want to be in the baking industry,” said Reneker.

“The bakery is currently in need of an additional fryer and two ovens. “More equipment means that I can host more
youngsters,” she added.

Anyone who is interested in learning how to bake can visit the bakery at 39 David’s Street, Eldorado Park Ext 9.
