A curly girl’s natural hair journey

"It's key to research before you use any product on your hair."

Janice Beckett.

Ever since I can remember, I had curly hair but always had my hair blown out because it was easier to manage. As I grew older I started doing my own hair and even burning my hair straight with a hairdryer and a hair iron.

I did this because people treated me better when I had straight hair and on days when I had my hair all big and curly people treated me like I was a wild child. For years I damaged with the heat but my curls always tried to fight through the straightness so every day I had to iron my hair.

A few months ago, I decided to stop with the heat because my poor curls seemed to be disappearing and I didn’t want that, so that’s when my natural hair journey began.

Now before you ask the question: “was that not her real hair?” I’ll explain, just because you have your own hair it doesn’t mean that it’s your ‘natural hair’, the original state of your hair has changed due to heat damage, colouring, straightening and using products that contain silicone, sulphates, or parabens for example.

All of those methods take your hair out of its natural state so when I say ‘going on a natural hair journey’ I mean refraining from all of the above.

When you start with the journey especially us ‘curly girls’ it’s important to understand your hair, now that’s learning about your hair porosity which basically means ‘how thirsty your hair is’ the categories are high, medium or normal and low porosity hair.

Hair that has a high porosity is usually very dry because the hair cuticles are open which allows all the moisture to escape. When you have low porosity hair is when the hair cuticles are closed and the moisture gets trapped in although one needs to open the cuticles in order for the moisture to get into the hair.

There’s a lot of things to learn about going on the natural hair journey but if you do embark on it, you have to understand that everyone’s journey is different, some people use home remedies, others use commercial products which have been approved by the curly hair community, whatever you choose, it’s really all up to you and what works on your hair.

It’s key to research before you use any product on your hair and it’s also key to understand that it’s a journey which requires patience.
