Satisfy your cravings as Kota makes a come back

The Soweto Kota Festival will take place at the Walter Sisulu Square.

Food lovers and all those who are passionate about Kasi lifestyle and culture are bracing themselves for the second edition of the Soweto Kota Festival.

Scheduled to take place at the historical Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown, the Soweto Kota Festival is expected to be even bigger and better this time around.

Organiser Sidwell Ntshingilane has promised a mind-blowing event which will be in line with the centenary celebration of the father of the nation Nelson Mandela.

“This year we have decided to move the festival to Kliptown because we wanted a bigger venue than the previous one. We are also expecting more people to attend since we are building from last year’s success,” explained Ntshingilane.

The inaugural Soweto Kota Festival which was held at the Soweto Theatre attracted crowds of about 7000 people from across the province. This year, organisers are pulling all the stops to make sure that the numbers rise.

Ntshingilane explains, “The bar has been raised not only in terms of the change of venue but also in terms of the brands that have come on board. We have attracted a few other big brands who will be doing demonstrations over the two days of the festival.”

Besides the fact that Walter Sisulu is a historical monument, the festival has been moved there to allow more space for more stalls and patrons expected this year.

Ntshingilane noted the congestion and long queues that were a challenge last year hence the move to Kliptown to avoid such. The two-day event is not just a Soweto thing. It has grown to a point where it has attracted kota vendors and other businesses from as far as Soshanguve and other parts of Gauteng.

It is also a good platform for local businesses and kasi chefs to showcase their culinary skills.

“Whether you call it iKota, spatlho, skhambane or township burger, the festival will showcase some of the most delicious township kotas. From traditionally prepared ones to some with a new, modern twist and even those which went to the most expensive private school, the Soweto Kota Festival will showcase them all,” said Ntshingilane.

While kotas will be the order of the day, the event will not be short of entertainment. A host of local DJs and artists are billed to keep fun seekers entertained throughout the weekend.

A kiddies play area and indigenous games will make sure that the festival provides a good outing for the whole family. The Soweto Kota Festival will take place at the Walter Sisulu Square on the weekend of September 8 and 9.
