The fatal bites by Pitbull

After the attack, the dogs were still in the neighbourhood.

In June, we published an article about a sixty-year-old man that was declared dead after being mauled and killed by Pitbulls in Westbury on May 12.

In the article, we received a report from Sophiatown communications officer, Jerbes de Bruyn stating that the Pitbulls who attacked the man belonged to his son.

However this information was incorrect and we had a chance to speak to the deceased man’s son, George Woodworth. Woodworth said that it’s hard to set the record straight but that as a family they had to accept that their dad is gone.

“I think it’s difficult for us to accept the way he passed. My dad has four kids and he lived with a friend and the friends family,” said Woodworth.

As far as Woodworth understood, the dogs knew his dad since they were puppies.

Woodworth explained: “We found out in the week leading up to his funeral that it wasn’t the first time that my dad was attacked by a dog, I’m not sure if it was one of the same dogs that attacked him but it wasn’t the first attack.

“We were told by the lady whose son owns the dogs that she came out to give my dad food. He lived in the backroom in the yard so she indicated that the attack already took place and that she found my dad lying there.

“When we got to the house my dad was already dead but was not pronounced dead as yet because the police were still waiting for the paramedics to come and proclaim that my dad died.

“A police officer took photos of my dad’s body and my brother and I went to go have a look because we wanted to see how he looked. When we found his body, he was lying on his back and his hands were on his sides but the insides of his stomach were completely out.

“Usually, Pitbulls go for the neck if they want to kill but my dad was not bitten on his neck. The undertaker told me that were bite marks on my dad’s hip and there were also scratches on his face. The pathologists report stated that he died from multiple sharp force injuries (dog bites). As far as I know, an inquest docket was opened at the Sophiatown Police Station.”

After the attack, the dogs were still in the neighbourhood. Woodworth said the SPCA said it was up to the owners of the dogs to decide on further steps.
