‘Where are our diski legends?’

Back in the 80’s and 90’s, Sowetans had the pleasure of watching the finest soccer players ply their trade and stamping their mark on a proudly South African brand of football.

Many of these players have represented local teams and the country in the national squad. Have you ever wondered what happened to most of those talented legends?

Vusi Buthelezi, who is famed for his flair on the soccer pitch, and a few other former soccer players like Sydney Maja and Benny Tendani met at the Diepkloof Multipurpose Centre to discuss the lack of footballing talent in the modern South African game.

They spoke about how true South African legends have been sidelined from the footballing fraternity. They attributed what they deem to be the poor performances from the national squad to that.

Thabo Makupu, Michael Rambau, Jacob Matuludi, Sydney Maja, Zwelethu Nkalitshana, Vusi Buthelezi and Benny Tendani stand together as one.

Buthelezi said, “We came together to rectify the current mundane state of our football, which is our pride, passion and religion. We refuse to sit by and watch it continue like it is.”

The former footballing maestros discussed how the South African Football Association (SAFA) is actually the community and the personnel were just administrators of the people’s mandate.

Zwelethu Nkalitshana agreed with the debate and added that the lack of genuineness from SAFA has driven players in the professional leagues to lacking the hunger and drive needed to play the game on a competitive level.

He said, “These issues are undermining our soccer legends who understand our soccer better and should be used to bring back our dignity in soccer.”

Buthelezi added that this has been a huge factor in the national squad’s poor performances in major leagues and competitions like the World Cup.
