Honouring the flowers of our nation

"Gender-based violence is not a men's or women's issue but an issue society needs to tackle together. We are in this war together."

The women from the Gauteng Department of Health often come face-to-face with casualties and have to use their years of experience and training to preserve lives so their patients can live another day.

For all they see and deal with, these women often receive little to no acknowledgement and suffer abuse from the very people they are here to serve.

The Department of Health sought to change that and hosted a Women’s Day celebration in honour of these workers who keep things afloat in hospitals.

The women were told that they are anything but normally because the work they do requires a resolve one has to cultivate when exposed to the sight of blood and patients with life-threatening injuries.

Mogeru Morehane of the Department of Health said that the women in the health industry have to carry many burdens in making sure that the hospitals are operational.

She added, “All women are to be celebrated, especially the ones who sometimes hold the lives of the public in their hands. They are the flowers of our nation. We are here today showing our gratitude.”

Brenda Dammie, Philisiwe Tau and Nthabi Montsho believe in women.

Councillor Brenda Dammie was also in attendance and she said, “It is rudimentary for the women to be respected, loved and celebrated because they keep families together and truly are the flowers of society.”

One of the keynote speakers, Philiswe Tau said that the aim of events like these was to bring an end to gender-based violence immediately.

She said, “Gender-based violence is not a men’s or women’s issue but an issue society needs to tackle together. We are in this war together.”

The celebration was held at the Diepkloof Multi-Purpose Centre and saw women from across the country in the Department of Health assembled to strengthen each other.
