PHOTOS: Using performing arts to help learners understand literature

“These youngsters will now have the opportunity to perform in theatres."

Vusi Tshabalala, an ambitious man from Tladi saw the need to educate the kids and entertain the community through a drama show called the Platinum Drama Show which is based on short stories from the Grade 7 Platinum English book. The rehearsals took place at the Pimville Skills Centre.

The Platinum Drama Show was a three-day show which lasted from August 14, 15 and ended on the 16th, at the Pimville Community Centre (PCC) with the assistance from a non-profit organisation, Mo-Afrika Ithlokomele.

Primary schools from Pimville, Nkholi Primary School, Winnie Ngwekazi Primary School, Paul Mosaka Primary School, Faresani Primary School, Mdelwa Hlongwane Primary School, Pimville Primary School, Tshebedisano Primary School and Khandubuhle Primary School were invited to be part of the audience and to learn.

The main purpose of the show was to ensure that the learners understood the book, to improve their vocabulary, to teach them how to live a positive lifestyle, moral values and to enhance the up and coming actors and actresses’ hidden talents in order for them to have easy access to perform in theatres.

“These youngsters will now have the opportunity to perform at the Soweto Theatre and Joburg Theatre as those are the targeted theatres,” said the producer and director of the show Tshabalala.

Oratile Mosekedi.

Tshabala said he prefers learners from different schools ranging from ages 14 to 15 years to be part of the project.

The next concept for the upcoming show is based on Heritage month, for the kids to have full knowledge of their culture and tradition because they are used to the modern society, not well informed about their roots and should be able to contrast the modern culture with their authentic traditional.

Parents are also invited to watch the upcoming shows during the September Spring holidays, Mo-Afrika Ithlokomele with its board members will be part of the event and tickets will be sold.
