Chiawelo residents serious about creating a cleaner, safer environment
They rolled up their sleeves and took part in the initiative by cleaning up the Soweto Mountain of Hope in Chiawelo.
Following the recent #Aresebetseng cleanup campaign in Chiawelo, the Ward 11 Councillor, Meisie Maluleke and Chiawelo residents continued with their efforts to keep the environment clean.
The residents heeded the call from the councillor to keep the streets of Soweto clean in commemoration of the annual Nelson Mandela Day. They rolled up their sleeves and took part in the initiative by cleaning up the Soweto Mountain of Hope in Chiawelo.
Maluleke reiterated the call to urge residents to continue to maintain the areas which have been cleaned to be litter free and encouraged them to join the movement of being environmental warriors by making sure that their streets are kept clean.
She also encouraged everyone to continue making a difference in the lives of the residents. The campaign started at the Avalon Area, which forms part of the Avalon Cemetery and the historical Chiawelo Koppie, where the Soweto Mountain of Hope is situated.
The mountain was covered with uncut trees, grass and huge rocks and residents feared for their lives as criminals have taken over the mountain for their own illegal activities. Maluleke said SOMOHO had a great history which needed to be preserved. A resident who assisted with the clean up, Themba Mogangata said it was the duty of the community to take care of their area. Mogangata said he has been voluntarily maintaining the park next to the mountain to provide a safe play area for the children.
