Elderly Women encouraged to know their status

Old women were urged to know their status, to exercise and take their medication.

On Wednesday, Diakonia Home Based Care hosted Women’s Health Screening in Central Western Jabavu. The aim of the campaign was to inform and educate elderly women about blood pressure, HIV testing and sugar diabetic that these diseases are controllable so that they can minimize the deaths caused by these chronic diseases.

Throughout the Health Screening elderly people were taught the importance of getting tested regularly for these chronic and deadly diseases. All the attendees were encouraged to stay healthy and test after three months.

Caregiver Girly Ledimo from Jabavu Clinic said they were there to ensure that elderly women are healthy as it is Women’s Month.

Old women were urged to know their status, to exercise and take their medication to maintain this disease because once their blood pressure is high it increases the risk of death.

“We are grateful for this initiative to educate and encourage us about the importance of testing and that elderly women need to visit their nearby clinics in time.

“I never miss this opportunity of getting tested and I would like to encourage our sisters and brothers to know their status and be faithful to one partner,” said Japhtalinah Tshabalala CEO of Diakonia.

Busisiwe Ndebele said they would like to encourage elderly women to join support groups so that they can exercise and fight these dangerous diseases and to relieve stress because they all come across different challenges but once they gather and be united they can achieve many things.

“Since its Women’s Month, we are promoting a healthy lifestyle and women should know their status,” added Ndebele.
