67 minutes an all year long initiative for church

The church encourages more people to join and create initiatives such as theirs as helping one another is a big part of our society's growth.

The giving spirit of Mandela Day has gone well into the month of August, as members of the Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Protea Glen embarked on a cleaning campaign of Protea Glen library last Saturday.

The church runs a Mormon’s Helping Hands programme in which they identify areas in the community in which they can help, on a regular basis according to Bonginkosi Mchiza, branch president of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Protea Glen.

“We identified Protea Glen library as a space in the community where we could use our helping hands because we noticed that it was a little unkempt. We also asked our members to collect old books so we could add to the library’s collection,” Mchiza explained.

Church members congregated at Protea Glen Library to clean the outside area of the library and also to donate books that are likely to assist the learners who use the library such as textbooks but also, something to read while they are relaxing such as fiction and children’s books.

Young members of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints came out in numbers to continue doing their 67 minutes beyond Mandela Day which takes place on July 18 annually.

“We want our community to be clean so we decided to play an active role in making sure that happens because a clean environment means a more healthy environment as well,” said Saseka Sithole and Tidimalo Rankoko.

They also noted that programmes such as Mormon’s Helping Hands provide a great opportunity to socialise as friends while being a helping hand as a social group.
