For the love of culinary

Cooking up a storm.

Adding to their culinary experience is the catering class from Emndeni Skills Development Centre as they completed their practicals over the beginning of this last week.

The idea was to put theory into practice and to promote independence among the students to make sure that they are capable and ready for the real world.

Most of the learners confessed how they both enjoyed and learned a lot during their practical examination and were confident that they would pass and take on the culinary world.

The practical examination took place over two days and required that the students prepare a three-course meal from different meat choices.

“Other than overseeing what the students are doing, my purpose is also to give them practical on-the-go tips that can help them execute great meals on the job.

“The nice thing I have learnt about this industry is that a meal is a meal and differs with the place and ingredients used, so the learners will be able to use what they have learnt anywhere and will adapt to multiple job requirements,” said centre facilitator, Patrice Mabalane.

“The practicals were extremely challenging because the main challenge is keeping up with pressure but at the end of the day, I’m learning so many things that I am going to use in my daily life.

“The most exciting thing about this programme is that you get to learn many things about cooking and get to experiment and play around with different flavours,” said Siphesethu Matthews, a student at the centre.

Going forward, the group of students will be going on a short work readiness programme and the centre will be preparing for their next intake at the end of August.
