WATCH: Babies and mommies get some needed exercise

The exercise is beneficial for the baby's health too as a happy baby is a healthy baby.

The Johnson’s Baby Healthy Skin Project celebrated Women’s Month last Tuesday with an educational workshop for babies and moms at the Protea Glen Unjani clinic.

The workshop saw Protea Glen’s mom getting an education on how to treat their babies’ skins which are more sensitive than adult skin.

“Your baby’s skin is the first line of defence against infections and allergies, healthy skin will improve the overall health of the baby,” said Sister Ntombizanele Diala, a nurse at the Protea Glen Unjani Clinic.

Sister Diala also gave the mothers, who were both new and second time mothers, advice on how to care for their babies’ skin.

“Mothers sometimes do harmful practices on their babies’ skin because maybe they are unaware that they are causing harm.

“These include using adult soaps on babies’ skin, using antiseptic liquids and they need to avoid scrubbing their babies’ skin because it causes scratches on the babies’ skin making it easier for germs to penetrate the skin,” she advised.

Mothers are encouraged to care for their babies’ skin using baby wash and water only according to Sister Diala. The day also included an exercise session for the babies and moms led by choreographer and fitness enthusiast, Ntaketo ‘Takkies’ Maswanganye.

Maswanganye noted that mothers rarely ever get a chance to exercise as they have to take care of their babies and the rest of the family. She says the class was designed to assist mothers to get their exercise in while taking care of their babies.

The babies also enjoyed the exercise class with their moms as the room was filled with baby laughter for the duration of the class. Maswanganye, a first-time mother, also noted that the exercise was beneficial for the baby’s health too as a happy baby is a healthy baby.
