Tired of lolly lounges? Join the fight and sign the petition!

"I have first-hand experience with what these substances are doing to our youth."

The lolly lounges in Eldorado Park, have become infamous for drugs, sex, rape and emotional abuse for those who frequent them.

As many may know, the name “lolly lounge” is derived from the glass pipe used to smoke drugs like crystal meth and tik and is shaped like a lollipop.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Gauteng Department of Social Development have urged residents in the area to assist authorities to destroy the drug dens which contribute to a number of social ills in Eldorado Park.

Last year, five visibly neglected children were found in need of care and protection because their parents were hooked on drugs. A few years ago former president Jacob Zuma visited Eldorado Park and promised to address the problem but addiction has risen and so have the crimes associated with the disease and according to Natasha Etty, an entrepreneur from Eldos, the drug problem is only getting worse.

Etty has taken it upon herself to start an online petition in hopes that somehow something will change.

“After many failed attempts with trying to get help from local councillors and SAPS, I decided to start this petition,” she said.

“I have first-hand experience with what these substances are doing to our youth, I see all sorts of criminal activities taking place daily. Drugs are destroying so many lives and it should be stopped,” she added.

When asked what she hoped the petition would achieve, Etty said, “I hope to get community leaders and councillors involved. Once the petition has been filled with signatures I will approach the Human Rights Commission’s office and seek help there.”
