Why are food gardens important?

Planting for sustainability.

While living in the interest and in the spirit of giving, this 67 Minutes was different at Busisiwe Primary in Zola.

As residents and volunteers from two different organisations gathered to start something new that would assure some sustainability for their feeding scheme, leaners gathered to celebrate the unveiling of their new garden.

Shalom organisation along with Hlumelelisa organisation took the brave stand to develop a piece of land at Busisiwe Primary School and start a vegetable garden for the school.

“We have been a development organisation that focuses on grooming young people and on this day we decided to come back to the school that some of us grew up in to give back.

“Thus we decided to start a food garden because we realised that the school doesn’t have one and it will be a gift they can keep and use over a long period of time.

“The nice thing is that we have already started this on this day and we will be able to uphold the idea that giving doesn’t only end on Mandela Day because we will be coming back to the school to do maintenance checks on the gardens we have started,” said Sonto Mthembu from Shalom.

Hlumelelisa on a daily basis is an organisation that deals with agriculture and horticulture thus the combination of these two organisations served their purpose well to leave learners with a worthy gift.
