WATCH: Ladies getting drilled at Boot camp this Women’s Month

Riverlea Aerobics Club encourages health and fitness.

The Riverlea Aerobics Club spent Women’s Day doing a boot camp for the ladies at the Riverlea Cricket Grounds. The icy winds may have kept people away but the 30 participants who were present were doing the most in this weather.

“We are raising awareness about health and fitness and in the same breath, we are also doing a drive for the young girls. What each participant had to do was to come with a pack of sanitary towels.

“We plan on going to Riverlea High School to donate the sanitary towels and to have a talk with the learners on the day. We also have the sisters (nurses) here from the Region B Health Department, they’re doing tests for cholesterol, blood pressure, HIV, and blood sugar.

“Basically, the health drive is a way of urging people to become aware of the importance of health and fitness, it’s not just about having a great body, I do believe that health and fitness go with knowing your body and going for regular tests,” explained Jacqueline Ohlsson, one of the aerobics instructors.

The instructor explained that the boot camp is associated with strength training. They had participants pulling tyres with rope, and also had a sailor rope which is meant to work the core.

The whole concept of the boot camp was basically to work ones’ core providing a strong firm core as well as a slim one. The club had mats out where participants were doing the army crawl and had the box jumps where participants jumped and ended in a squat for their leg muscles.

According to Ohlsson, participants also went to get tested, the tests were free and the club encouraged everyone to go. Participants paid R50 and the club also had a fundraiser of R200 for a goodie bag which had a whole lot of goodies for the ladies like hair care and nail care products, a Riverlea Aerobics towel along with a water bottle.

“We raise funds for our underprivileged young girls at the gym. The aim of the fundraising is to equip them with proper sports bras because it’s very important to have a proper sports bra and we also want to assist a few girls with training shoes,” added Ohlsson.

When asked what Women’s Day meant to her, Ohlsson said: “In my own opinion, celebrating Women’s Day encourages women to know where they stand, to know that they are independent and that they are recognised because I do think that besides being oppressed, we are very emotional beings.

“When we are all together like this, it’s great teamwork and as ladies we have issues but when we come together and unite it encourages us to become stronger. Men present this morning were just there in support of the whole fundraising.”
