No crime too big or too small to be reported, say Kliptown police officials

Women's Month has arrived and women in the Kliptown area are speaking out about their experiences at police stations.

Women’s Month has arrived and women in the Kliptown area are speaking out about their experiences at police stations.

According to these women, police officers at the Kliptown Police Station haven’t been helpful, but have shown themselves hesitant about opening cases of domestic violence.

A Kliptown resident who spoke on condition of anonymity said that she was assaulted in broad daylight and when she reported the incident at the police station an officer on duty told her that a case could not be opened because it was just a common assault.

“I was assaulted by a man who doesn’t live far from me. He grabbed my shirt and threw me on the ground, and strangled me. I couldn’t breathe,” she said.

“When I got to the police station and explained what happened, a female officer denied my right to report the matter and open a case. Instead, I was sent from pillar to post but no police officer was able to assist,” she added.

Hitler Ngwenya, who is the communications officer at the Kliptown Police Station said that the way the matter was handled was unacceptable, “I want to make it clear that the police station is there to assist the public.

Everyone has the right to open a case, no matter the magnitude of the crime. I am disappointed with how my fellow officers treated this lady and I will definitely discuss it with the officer in question.

We are here to serve the community, not to waste the residents’ time,” he added. Ngwenya encouraged residents to report police officers who are not doing their jobs.

“We have a complaints office as well as a suggestion box at the police station, residents need to make use of it,” said Ngwenya.

If anyone is not satisfied with the service they received, they can ask to speak to colonel Kubeka, whose office is in room 19. The colonel can be contacted on 011 959 0500/01 or 082 410 9859.

Despite the incident that happened at the police station Ngwenya said that the crime in Kliptown has decreased thanks to the community who is on board with eradicating crime.
