One of the biggest problems faced by our country at large and within our very communities is the issue of electricity and consistent electricity supply.

Closing off the winter season last Thursday was a community demonstration where a section of the in Zondi and Jabulani community voiced their dissatisfaction with the national power supply.

For more than a week, the residents had to find alternative ways of surviving without electricity as the there was another power outage once again in less than two months in the same areas.

In response, the community blocked Kome Road leading from Dobsonville with burning tyres closing the road between the Pikituk depot in Zondo up until Emncanmlezweni crossing.

Traffic was disrupted with commuters having to find alternative ways of entering Jabulani and Zola, the most affected commuters were the ones making their way to Jabulani Mall.

“It is sad to live in the dark for so many days yet when you go across the street you see people living their lives like normal because they have electricity.

“We cannot be the only ones feeling this pain out of the whole entire community, hence we blocked the roads because we want other residents to feel what we feeling and when regular services are disrupted, then the government seems to respond faster,” said Themba Zikode.

Zikode is a resident from Zondi who says that it is not the first time that this community experiences this kind of problem, in recent months, the same section of residents went on for close to a week without electricity.

The power utility is investigating the cause of the problem and will soon respond on the matter.
