Fire causes damage to 14 homes in Newclare

Felicity Flats residents in great distress.

On July 28, at about 4.30am, residents at the Felicity Flats in Newclare were woken up by smoke and some even had fire coming into their living spaces.

According to Chris Vivier from the Johannesburg Emergency Services, the fire occurred due to flames caught by gasoline.

Vivier explained that a resident was using a gas cylinder to cook for a funeral when the gasoline caught flames and caused superficial burns to her face.

Superficial burns are those burns that cause redness to the skin and the pain can last for a few days.

“The fire spread through the ceiling causing all the damage on the top floor. There was a community member that was very courageous and helpful by getting people out and trying to contain the fire,” said Vivier.

According to the emergency services official, five flats caught fire, five flats were damaged by the smoke of the fire and the bottom flats had water damage.

Vivier said that the resident who was burnt received treatment on the scene and disaster management, as well as social development, were there to assist the residents where they could.

Five days after the fire we contacted Ward councillor Susan Stewart and she said: “The housing department is working on an insurance claim and once the claim is made they will start fixing the damages.

“The various entities such as City Power will also be sent out to fix those flats that got damaged during the fire.”
