Shield Sbonis’i Diski finals week kicks off

International Chelsea FC coaches put top 25 regional finalists to ultimate pressure test

The Shield Sbonis’i Diski is at the final stage and 3 of the 25 finalists will be travelling to England. In it’s second year, the campaign has partnered with two football giants, Chelsea FC and Orlando Pirates FC to scout for the best football talent in Mzansi. Out of 600 hopeful players 5 players were chosen from the five regions to make this top 25 players. The regional trials took place in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Durban and Pretoria.

1 August to 3 August saw international development coaches at Chelsea FC, Laurence Griffin-Development team head coach, Steve O’Really- Chelsea Football Development Coach and Freddie Myers-the U19 Chelsea Foundation Head Coach, put the Shield Sbonis’iDiski’s top 25 regional finalists to the ultimate pressure test for the final week at the TUKS High Performance Centre in Pretoria to discover South Africa’s next soccer Champions.

Griffin said that picking the 3 players, they will be looking at quiet a number of qualities, these includes, a great command of the ball, understanding of the game as well as psychological strength.

Shield Sbonis’iDiski head Coach, Siphiwe Mkhonza said that the talent they have seen from the players on the field has been phenomenal and he is excited to see them pursue their dreams.

The top 3 winners are set to be announced on September 11. In addition, Orlando Pirates will also announce the next champion who will score one year professional contract with their development team on September 18 when 3 players return from Chelsea.
