Taking biking to the next level

Young teenage boys from Emndeni, Naledi and other parts of Soweto gathered at Naledi for their first annual bike event.

Featuring more than two pimped out bike clubs, their meeting and the annual event was a spectacle to show off the best bike and the best bike riding skills that boys from Soweto had to offer.

For the longest time, having a bicycle has been an integral part of our youth for social and muscular development, but is if not very often where young people would turn bike riding into a hobby.

“We all friends from the same location but we found a special interest in each other. Most people would have a pet to take care of but for me, my bike is my pet and my hobby so I’ve learnt to take care of it and I have found ways of making it one of the best bikes in Soweto,” said Simangaliso Mazibuko.

Their event featured two dominant bike crews from Soweto namely; Soweto Toys Crew from Naledi and Emndeni and the Soweto Torovan Nation which has its roots based in Chiawelo along with individuals from others parts of Soweto including Dobsonville and Pimville.

The main order of the day was bike racing, drifting and showing off at the open space behind Ikemeleng Primary School in Naledi, with the Soweto Toys Crew dominating the racing events.

“We spent time, effort and money to get these bikes to be like this. Its been two years since I started working on my bike, I started by getting a secondhand bike and then dismantled mine and joined it with the frame of a scrap bike that I bought at a cheap price.

“After that, I invested in finishing it off with bright colours and an exclusive rim. The total cost to make it look like this I estimate was about R1600,” said Bibo Ngwenya from Emndeni.
