At last! Proof that the pen is mighty

"Many people look down on security guards."

Security guards or officers work long hours and many are still paid peanuts. Onkarabile Mokoto is a security guard with a difference-despite the gruelling hours he works, he found the time to be an author.

After matriculating, he furthered his studies at the University of the Witwatersrand where he studied education, but he dropped out in his third year.

Mokoto had to be independent and make means to survive and support his family. He tried applying for several jobs but he was stuck as a security guard.

His love for writing started when he was still in primary school and he used to read his sister’s books and novels.

“During my tertiary years, I was a preacher who used to tell people how they could hear God when he speaks,” said Mokoto.

He never pursued it as there was no one to support and motivate him to move in a direction more compatible with his talents.

Mokoto said, “I didn’t let my job define me, instead I regarded it as a means to an end and not the other way round.”

The accomplished writer has proven that security guards have brains too.

“I took a leap of faith, told myself that I would make it and I started writing my first book, titled, How to hear God when he talks. I explain it more to people that we have certain expectations from God and how they too can connect with Him,” said Mokoto.

He is planning to write more books and to continue using his story to motivate others.

“Many people look down on security guards,” he said.

However, Mokoto’s tale will change the perception people have of security officers. His achievements show that you can be what you want to be in life, regardless of the job you’re doing.
