Have we accepted illegal dumping?

Stop illegal dumping.

Illegal dumping has seen many residents practicing the norm instead of going the right route. It is the dumping of waste illegally instead of using an authorised method such as using an authorised rubbish dump.

It is also an illegal deposit of any waste onto land including waste dumped or tipped on a site with no licence to accept waste.

Characteristics of offenders include local residents, construction and landscaping contractors, waste removers, scrap yard operators, and automobile and tire repair shops.

Such incidents of dumping have seen most innocent people getting affected in these situations whereby they get diseases due to bad smell caused by waste which has been dumped illegally.

A Dlamini-based resident, Jafta Ntanzi has made it his duty to clean up and open field which has turned to be an illegal dumping site for nearby residents.

What was meant to be a park to keep children away from loitering turned into a dumping site for a long time and Ntanzi has turned tables by cleaning the area and is on a mission to make it a better place for children.

The dump site is situated in a nearby school in Dlamini and Ntanzi, as a grown-up citizen has made it clear that he will never allow anyone to continue dumping at the area.

With no help, he has been cleaning the area alone and has also decided to live in the area every day to make sure that the place is kept clean.

“This place was meant to be a safe area for children but now it has become a crime spot. I have made it my duty to show people that it is not a dumping site and I will continue to keep it clean for as long as I live,” said Ntanzi.

He said the place has become an area for criminals and people who smoke nyaope have occupied it as their smoking area. Some people who live near the area confirmed that they have since been affected by the bad smell caused by the dumping.

“We are glad that Ntanzi has come out to help us with the situation. “He is not doing it for himself but for everyone living in the area,” said Sibusiso Sibiya who is among people living near the illegal dumping site.

Another resident, Kholeka Mathebe said she was badly affected by the bad smell as people used to dump waste near her home.

Ntanzi said with the help of the community including City Parks they can achieve their goal of making the place beautiful for the children and the community at large.
