#67Minutes: Harvey Cohen celebrates Mandela Month

Harvey Cohen Centre a safe haven for the disabled.

The Harvey Cohen Centre in Eldorado Park is a safe haven for mentally and physically disabled persons.

The centre, which was established in 1967, continuously ensures that the individuals at the home are not forgotten by society and is home to about 120 disabled persons, each with different special needs.

Just like the rest of the world celebrated Mandela Day, the centre was no different and they took part in the birthday celebrations as well.

According to Johnny Edwards, a photographer who holds the centre close to his heart, the birthday celebration was a huge success and everyone had fun.

“The residents at the centre were treated to a magic show, face painting, juggling, dancing and they had had a live DJ too,” said Edwards. A cake was delivered by Robin Le Roux and was enjoyed by everyone.

Cheryl Scott, who is the centre manager, said that the festivities started at 9 am and ended during the late afternoon, “We are eternally grateful to EldosFM for their commitment to making this event a success since the year 2016,” said Scott.

She added that EldosFM’s sponsors were Bin Dawood Butchery at Jamila Centre for food, Charlton Brown for sound, Coca-Cola for drinks, Southgate Mall for Face painting, Magic – magician and Suraya’s Bakery.

“The management and staff provided entertainment, music and good food. We were entertained by the staff of EldosFM who performed items in the form of poems, songs and words of encouragement for us.

“The staff also assisted with the handing over of meals to our residents at the centre. It was a real pleasure to have them on board again this year,” said Scott.

While the birthday celebrations were underway, a team from Woolworths Honey Ridge, Randpark Ridge spent their 67 minutes of charitable work giving back to the centre by painting two rooms which were in need of a fresh coat of paint.

Woolworths store manager, James Davids, and his team donated paint to the value of R 5 000 as well as produce and fruit for beneficiaries at the centre.

“We are very grateful to them for starting this project as it was long overdue. The beneficiaries were pleasantly surprised at the beautiful colours. I commend James Davids, Vanessa Dixon and their teams for the professional manner in which they managed this important function,” said Scott.

The centre also thanked Sheldon Roodt from X-Corp who surprised them with four bags of clothing for the beneficiaries.

Lorreal Ferris from EldosFM said in a statement that the radio station celebrates Harvey Cohen every Mandela Day. The names and surnames of the residents in the photographs were not mentioned in order to protect their identities.
