‘Education is the great engine of personal development’

#MadibaMonth: 67 minutes.

Ward 45 residents, in answer to former president Nelson Mandela’s call to invest in the future of our children, embarked on a cleanup and painting initiative to honour the global icon with their 67 minutes at the Dr Mary Mahlalela Primary School in Dobsonville.

According to the ward councillor, Emanuel Tseledi, they noticed that the school’s walls were dirty and in urgent need of a new coat of paint.

He said, “We usually host our public meetings in the school’s main hall, that is why we decided that we should dedicate our time and effort on this historical day by giving back to the school.

Teacher Rebecca Manyathela, Anna Sehlapelo, Julia Nedzanda and Caroline Moloi.

“Despite the fact that we were supposed to dedicate 67 minutes of our time to the school, our team of volunteers went the extra mile by going beyond the stipulated time in making sure that the children will be learning in a clean environment,” said Tseledi.

According to Tseledi, the paint was donated by the school and the community volunteered their effort and time to giving the school a beautiful facelift.

The school’s spokesperson, Rebecca Manyathela said the community’s efforts clearly showed that they have the love of their children at heart.

She said their efforts were aligned with Madiba’s words when he said, “Education is the great engine of personal development.

“It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mineworker can become the head of the mine, that a child of farm workers can become the president of a great nation. It is what we make out of what we have, not what we are given, that separates one person from another.”

She said they were grateful for the work put in by the learners, residents of the community and educators at the school.
