Orlando residents demand answers

"We want to restore the faith of the community in the justice department."

The community of Boom Town in Orlando East wants to know what really happened the night Floyd Makoe and Rodney Mathebula died.

A community leader Tim Thema and other leaders have been trying hard to find out why the accused has not appeared in court.

On July 17, they marched to Orlando Court in search for answers in the chief prosecutor who is handling the case.

They sang outside the court as they wait for the prosecutor but she was nowhere to be found around the court. United they marched for justice. It’s over a month since the incident happened but the community members are not satisfied with how the case is being handled.

It was difficult for the marchers to submit their memorandum as the main person that they were looking for was not around. The protesters were not ready to give up on their mission.

Amongst the protesters was the Member of Parliament Tsepo Mhlongo. The act of anger and bitterness comes a week after the investigator that is responsible for their case presented the information about the case to the community during a community meeting that was held in Zifuneleni Secondary School.

Where he explained that they do not have enough evidence for the case and they should wait for the postmortem. Thema said this is their way of saying enough is enough justice must be served and corruption must be bought to book.

He said they do understand that they should wait for the postmortem but the accused should be behind bars. Thema alleged that the investigator does not engage with the leaders.

Mhlongo said it is uncalled for that the case was not followed, he added that there were no Bathu Pele principles. He explained that being open about the progress of the case which includes if the case is withdrawn is of importance.

“We want good prosecutors in and bad prosecutors out. We want to restore the faith of the community in the justice department,” concluded Mhlongo.
